Area Engineer I
Oversees an Area Office and is responsible for all area office operations. Interprets, organizes, plans, schedules, executes and coordinates major technical engineering assignments; manages construction and maintenance activities, performs engineering design work, calculates costs and conducts various studies for an area office. Manages professional, technical, clerical employees and supervisors. Reports to the District Engineer. Work requires extensive contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.
Duties
The essential duties for this job include:
Approves and inspects driveway, utility and drainage fill permits, and monitors removal of illegal signs. Drives to perform this duty.
Approves project candidate submission for program calls.
Coordinates with the Federal Highway Administration and Federal Aviation Administration on federally funded projects.
Coordinates work and agreements with airport administrators, municipal and county governments, entertainment districts and convention bureaus.
Directs administrative and business operation activities including human resources, training programs, inventory oversight, safety and preparation and monitoring of budgets.
Directs and plans project development and/or provides estimates.
Monitors signing, pavement marking and striping to ensure compliance with standards.
Oversees inspection of construction projects and temporary traffic control.
Oversees operations of the maintenance sections to include planning and budgeting work with maintenance supervisors and district staff.
Oversees, coordinates and monitors contractors' compliance with plans and specifications; authorizes payment of estimates; resolves differences, disputes and claims; plans preparation and approval of expenditures.
Oversees, plans and executes emergency procedures, preparedness and response for a geographic area; as required responds to office/incident location to direct/oversee activities for emergency situations/conditions.
Represents the Department to the public; answers inquiries from governmental officials, makes media presentations, speaks at public functions and participates in other civic endeavors.
Responsible for material testing and construction engineering.
Reviews, recommends and approves change orders.
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

This job requires the following:
Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering related discipline
Work Experience
This job requires the following experience:
7 years in transportation engineering including 2 years as a Licensed Professional Engineer (LPE)
(Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent)
Must have one (1) year supervisory/managerial experience. Project leader or lead worker experience may substitute for supervisory/managerial experience.
Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.

Safety Impact Certificate
Safety Impact certiication is not required at time of application. The Safety Impact certification will be issued by TxDOT at the time of hire.
Other Conditions:
Professional engineers licensed in another state, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the Texas Board Of Professional Engineers within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.
This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
Conditions of Employment
Safety Impact certification is not required at the time of application.The Safety Impact certification will be issued by TxDOT at the time of hire.
Required to work weekends and holidays.
Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.
Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.
Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.
Driver's record check will be conducted by the Department. Satisfactory driving records are required for driving state or personal vehicles and motor driven equipment to conduct agency business.
Must attend work regularly and observe approved work hours.
External final applicants for any department position who could potentially be required to drive for the department must pass a drug test prior to employment and will be subject to reasonable cause testing during employment.
External final male applicants who are 18-25 years of age will be required to furnish proof of registration or exemption from registration with the Selective Service System.
Successful completion of a post-offer/pre-employment physical exam at the employer's expense is required.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
